Wood Orientation (HELP) (2024)

So, I just started playing terraria a couple of weeks ago, and I am starting to discover more and more about the game. I have gotten to the stage where I have gotten passionate on making decorative buildings. I don't know much about the hundreds of terraria blocks, actually I only like know about 50 of them, but I have plenty of different types of wood at the moment. So I started building, I saw some cool designs online and got some good ideas, but when I started building with the wood, I was surprised. I never knew that different woods "merged" with other different ones, where ever the blocks were placed, as long as it was a DIFFERENT wood and a NEXT TO another DIFFERENT wood, it would always merge (merge meaning, that the designs "combine," but, I don't know if it is actually merging, it looks more like visual glitches). I thought of this as pretty cool, but as I kept building, the woods kept merging with each other and messing up the design. If I wanted multiple FLAT PLANKS stacked up together, sorta forming a wall, it would just be a continous brick, but if I added a DIFFERENT wood layer ON TOP of the previous stacks, the layer which it was touching would all "merge"/glitch. I kept looking online at images of other multi-wood buildings and saw that all the woods were staying separated. It was like they were keeping their ORIENTATION. First of all, is this a new feature maybe, I do play in the new, 1.4 Terraria on a small, normal world, but is this actually supposed to happen. Second, what is causing this? Is it the fact that they are just right next to each other, or are there other factors at play? And finally, is there even a thing in Terraria as block orientation, and if yes, how do I change this.

I have researched for hours on the Terraria Wiki, but couldn't find anything so I turned to the forums. I don't have an image at the moment, but can get one if anyone has advice.

Can you include an example of images you're trying to recreat?

Without seeing what you were building, but I'm guessing it depended on the wood blocks in questions.

Some wood blocks have different framing than others, and may work differently in combos like that.

The tile merging of wood blocks has not changed significantly that I'm aware of, so you should be able to recreate anything you saw in a screenshot. There are also some more advanced building tricks that might be in play, but I'd have to see what you were trying to do.

Ok, I got some pictures and I am going to be explaining my problems in some detail, so hang in with me.

So the first image I attached is the house design I found online that I wanted to recreate in my world, but when I started building I ran into TWO major problems: Orientation (wood grain), and Merging/Interference.

Ill first be addressing the Orientation/Wood Grain problem:

(This whole paragraph is talking about the images I found online) If you look at the image that I've drawn on, look at the arrows I've drawn. Each one is correlating with a certain wood on its ORIENTATION, whether it is horizontal or verticle. You can see with the VERTICLE LIME ARROW, the living wood next to it is verticle. You can see with the HORIZONTAL CYAN ARROW that those pieces of living wood are oriented in a horizontal way. You can see with the HORIZONTAL BLUE ARROW that those rich mahogany wood pieces are stacked up on top of each other staying horizontal. And for the HORIZONTAL LIME ARROW, you can see that the pieces of living wood are staying together like a log, staying horizontal.

Now let's look at the pictures of my attempt, open them in another tab if you can't see them clearly:

So, I posted 3 images (unedited) of my attempts, each one showing the different steps of progression. The first image is the one with just the door and the first chunk of woods, if you look closely at that image and the original, nothing is wrong. Then, move on to the next image, where there is the log of dynasty wood on top, this is where I first see my problem (this is more of a merging problem so Ill address this in the next section). And now the final image, this is the image where I put the rest of the mahogany and living wood blocks up on top of the dynasty wood, this was the biggest orientation problem. Where ever there was wood BOTH on TOP and on the BOTTOM of the dynasty wood, the dynasty wood would go weird. I'll attach a more zoomed-in and labeled image for ease. I have no clue why that happens, but all I know is that it's not supposed to because if you look at the zoomed-in image of the design I found online, nothing like that is happening. The wood is staying AS IT IS. You can also see in the next image that the wood grain of the living wood is also messed up. LOOK AT THE ORIGINAL ONLINE IMAGE, you see that the same corner I highlighted on my attempt is supposed to be a 90-degree BEND, but when I made this on my world, IT IS STILL STRAIGHT. I don't know why.

But those are the main problems just with the wood grain, I don't know why this happens, but if you could explain that would be amazing.

I can only explain the grain part right now, but I'll try to explain the merging/glitch problem later.

I think you're probably using the wrong blocks - lots of builders use non-wood blocks painted brown to look like wood, so it might be a case of something like that. Someone more knowledgeable of different tiles might be able to provide more insight.

Dude, I never thought of that... That does make sense but look at the mahogany. On the online image that IS mahogany because of the patterns, so why are the weird glitches only happening to me?
Using your "different blocks but dyed" theory, do you think instead of using dynasty wood in the middle it is another type of brick or something dyed brown? Is there another, non-wood, block that has the texture of those middle dynasty wood (or whatever block it is) blocks?

So I just shot Khaios a message (it's his build) and he says that that screenshot was taken before 1.4, which changed how wood blending worked. If you loaded up that build in the current version it would blend like yours.

Dang, really. So now this is an actual feature in the game? Okay, I never knew that. Thanks for all your help, and is Khaios apart of these forums? Since he's a builder I would like to ask him how to bypass this feature in 1.4.

Thanks a lot!

He is (@Khaios) but I don't think he's particularly active here at the moment.
