FAQs

What's the difference between a safety toe and a steel toe? ›

Durability – While they can withstand the same impacts, non-steel safety toes may be compromised by a single significant blow, or by a high volume of wear and tear. Steel toes offer greater durability and impact resistance over the long term, in exchange for being slightly heavier.

How much weight can a steel toe boot resist? ›

Usually a steel toe boot has an ASTM 75 pound-foot compression resistance rating, meaning it can withstand compression up to 2,500 pounds. That means if a warehouse-grade forklift ran over your foot, there's a good chance your toes wouldn't get crushed—but only if you're wearing steel toe boots.

Does OSHA recommend steel toe boots? ›

OSHA standards require puncture-resistant and slip-resistant footwear for construction workers. Safety boots on construction sites also need considerable impact and shear protection to shield workers from falling objects or heavy equipment. Steel-toed boots are best-suited to meet all OSHA safety boot requirements.

How do I protect my feet from steel toe shoes? ›

There are special steel toe socks which have cushions around the toes and heels, to add a buffer between your feet and the rough material that will be protecting them. These socks are thick and will take up even more space in the shoe, so it is best to have a pair on when figuring out which boot is best for you.

Which is safer steel toe or composite toe? ›

In terms of impact protection, steel toe boots can withstand a higher level of impact than composite toe boots. However, composite toe boots are still able to meet the safety standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

Is carbon toe as safe as steel toe? ›

In the safety shoe industry, composite toe caps are often created with a combination of non-metal materials like Kevlar, carbon fiber, plastic, or fiberglass. They do, however, meet the same CSA safety requirements as a steel toe.

Why are military boots not steel toe? ›

The standard issue combat boots are designed for maximum flexibility, traction, ankle support, and durability to handle the stresses of combat maneuvers. They have a composite toe cap rather than steel, which protects the feet from compression and impact while allowing more natural movement.

Why are steel toe shoes so heavy? ›

Steel-toed boots do tend to be slightly heavier than regular boots due to the presence of a steel cap in the toe area. The steel toe adds extra weight to the boot, but the difference in weight is typically minimal and may not be noticeable for most individuals.

How do I stop my steel toe boots from hurting? ›

Adding work shoe insoles, getting the proper boot fit from quality boots and wearing the right socks will make a huge difference. Adding Ramble, Pace or Dash insoles to your work boots can make them much more comfortable. If you prefer a firm insole with some flex or are new to wearing insoles, go with Ramble.

Does my employer have to pay for steel toe boots? ›

The employer is not required to pay for non-specialty safety-toe protective footwear (including steel-toe shoes or steel-toe boots) and non-specialty prescription safety eyewear, provided that the employer permits such items to be worn off the job-site.

Can you wear steel toe boots all the time? ›

If you're wearing steel toe boots every day, it's almost inevitable that you'll experience some level of foot pain. The most common causes of foot pain from wearing safety boots include blisters, rubbing, corns and ingrown toenails.

Why do steel toe boots hurt my feet? ›

While that isn't always an easy task, it's important to do the research to find the right pair. Often, the pain associated with steel toe boots is caused because the boots are too narrow or too loose for the wearer. For tips on how to break in your new boots, click here.

Should steel toe shoes be tight or loose? ›
