Ingredients

This is a mayonnaise based sauce. It is the perfect creamy base for many dipping sauces. Joanie likes to use Primal Kitchen’s Real Mayonnaise made with Avocado Oil. It contains no gluten, sugars, or soy. It is definitely low carb as it contains zero carbs. If you only have Hellman’s or any Real Mayonnaise on hand, it will also be okay. It may contain sugar, but will be low carb. As always, it is a good idea to read labels.

The key ingredient in tartar sauce is pickles! Yes, that is the crunchy part. Sometimes you will also see capers, but you may not always have them on hand. But, don’t skip the chopped pickles. Use dill pickles, that is where that tartar taste comes from. Joanie also adds some of the dill pickle juice, since it tends to permeate that flavor through the sauce. In addition, it thins the sauce just a bit. Fresh dill is also a nice touch to meld dill into each serving. You can use dried dill instead (as noted in the notes below). But, fresh dill is easy to find, and, well. it’s fresh. Another ingredient Joanie likes in her Keto Tartar Sauce Recipe is just a bit of horseradish. It adds a little kick and tang. Oh, and give the Dijon Mustard a try, it adds to the flavor, color, and creaminess.

Preparation Tips

The preparation is easy! Grab a small bowl and mix all of the ingredients with a spatula until blended thoroughly. Refrigerate for an hour or more so the flavors will meld together. It will keep in the refrigerator for a week or two. Some folks will say that is too long, but they are being over cautious. We have had no problem keeping the sauce. In fact, we often double the recipe, so we have leftover. Storing in a mason jar is ideal. Make sure you serve tartar sauce cold.

Serving suggestions are so varied. Tartar sauce is not just for fried fish. We love this recipe as a vegetable dip. It is just perfect with Jicama fries. The taste is even better than traditional mayonnaise for your Belgium fries. We will post our Jicama fry recipe (baked and air-fryer) soon. You can even use our Keto Tartar Sauce Recipe as a dipping sauce for steamed mussels. We do have two delicious Mussel recipes with their own sauces our site. However, just a big batch of mussels steamed in white wine, garlic, and shallots would result in a perfect seafood appetizer for our tartar sauce. In this post we show it being served with our Keto Creamy Cole Slaw as a side, and our almond crusted fish (baked or air-fryer). The Cole Slaw recipe is a favorite of our followers.
